Germany's government is considering ways to support Volkswagen , German economy minister and vice chancellor Robert Habeck said on Thursday, when asked about the threat of job cuts at the country's largest carmaker.

The cuts would hit hardest among the automaker's research and development activities in Germany where 4,000 to 6,000 jobs would be lost,  a business magazine said.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Friday that he wants to help Volkswagen get through a period of cost-cutting without having to resort to site closures, reflecting concerns about the country's biggest carmaker.

The job security agreement between Volkswagen and the union, IG Metall, which represents workers in the automotive and other heavy industries, has existed since 1994. It had provided protection from layoffs through 2029, but the company would be able to sever it with three months' notice.
